Der Satz geht zurück auf eine mit „Der Wert eines Menschen" überschriebene Meldung aus dem französischen Journal des Débats vom 13. August 1929, in der von dem Versuch eines englischen Chemikers berichtet wird festzustellen, woraus der Mensch besteht und was sein chemischer Wert ist. Die Notiz wurde unter dem Stichwort „Mensch" unkommentiert in das „Dictionnaire critique" der u.a. von George Bataille herausgegebenen Zeitschrift Documents übernommen (Nummer 3, 1929, dt. in: Kritisches Wörterbuch, Beiträge von George Bataille, Carl Einstein, Marcel Griaule, Michel Leiris u.a., hrsg. und übers. von Rainer Maria Kiesow u. Henning Schmidgen, Berlin 2005, S. 15).

The sentence references an article entitled "The Value of a Person" in the French Journal des Débats dated August 13, 1929, reporting an English chemist's attempt to ascertain what mankind is made of and what his chemical value is. Under the heading "Mankind" the remarks were included without
comment in the "Dictionnaire critique" in the magazine Documents edited, among others, by George Bataille (number 3, 1929, German in: Kritisches Wörterbuch, articles by George Bataille, Carl Einstein, Marcel Griaule, Michel Leiris and others, edited and translated by Rainer Maria Kiesow and Henning Schmidgen, Berlin 2005, p. 15).
